In April 2024, AstraZeneca (AstraZeneca plc) announced that the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an additional prescription weight loss medication to treat overweight and obese patients who are obese.

The medication, Xenical (pronounced “Xenical”), was developed to lower the body weight that patients with obesity may expect to lose by the end of 2023 compared to those with normal weight. Obesity can cause a person to gain weight when their body’s ability to absorb nutrients is reduced. For this reason, Xenical is approved to treat overweight and obese patients. The drug is available only with a doctor’s prescription.
